I served this for breakfast at the church and got rave reviews. I baked it the night before, then just warmed it up. This receipe can be easily doubled. It is not too sweet, and can be used for gluten free if you use gluten free bread.

Ingredients For baked french toast

  • 1 loaf
    french bread, sliced
  • 8 lg
    eggs
  • 1/4 c
    milk
  • 1 can
    evaporated milk
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp
    freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 c
    sugar
  • 1 pinch
    salt
  • TOPPING
  • 2 stick
    butter
  • 1/2 c
    packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp
    freshly grated nutmeg
  • 4 Tbsp
    corn syrup, dark or light
  • 1/2 c
    chopped pecans

How To Make baked french toast

    Pre heat oven to 375F. Butter bottom and sides of deep 9 x 13 baking dish.

    Arrange bread slices (standing up) in dish and set aside.

    In large mixing bowl meat eggs, milks, sugar, salt, vanilla and spices until completely mixed and frothy.Pour mixture over the bread, making sure it gets between the slices and set aside.

    In separate mixing bowl cream together butter, brown sugar, syrup, vanilla and spices, mixing util well blended. Stir in chopped nuts, and spread mixture over the bread.

    Bake uncovered 20 - 25 minutes until browned and bubbly. Allow to cool slightly and serve warm with pancake syrup, if desired.
