This is a very quick bread if you want it for dinner in a hurry and its delicious and goes with any kind of meal.Legend has it the slash on top of the loaf allows the fairies to escape.

Ingredients For irish soda bread

  • 1/2 c
    raisins
  • 1/2 c
    hot brewed black tea
  • 2 tsp
    caraway seeds
  • 1 c
    flour
  • 3/4 c
    whole wheat flour
  • 3/4 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 3/4 c
    milk or buttermilk
  • 2 Tbsp
    packed brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp
    butter or oil

How To Make irish soda bread

    Combine raisins with tea in small bowl or cup and let soak for 10 minutes.Then drain.

    Crush caraway seeds. You can omit if you like.

    Whisk all purpose flour,wheat flour,baking soda and salt.

    Stir in raisins and caraway seeds.

    Mix milk, brown sugar and butter. Gradually stir into flour mixture just till dry ingredients are moistened.

    Knead dough a couple of times not alot so it will stay tender.

    Shape into a ball and place in greased pie plate or baking sheet.

    Flatten to about 2 inches.

    Make 1/2 inch deep crisscross slash on top of bread.

    Bake at 425 for 30-40 minutes.When toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
