I have this recipe in a church cookbook and the biscuits bake up high and fluffy.

Ingredients For angel biscuits

  • 5 c
    flour
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 2 pkg
    active dry yeast
  • 1/2 c
    warm water (110 degrees)
  • 3 tsp
    baking powder
  • 3/4 c
    shortening
  • 2 c
    buttermilk
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 3 Tbsp
    sugar, divided

How To Make angel biscuits

    In a one cup measure pour in warm water. Stir in yeast and 1 Tbsp. of the sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes.

    In a large bowl, sift dry ingredients including the remaining 2 Tbsp. sugar together. Cut in shortening. Add the yeast mixture and butter milk and mix well.

    Since this makes a large batch, you can store it in the refrigerator for 7-10 days and pinch off amount needed.

    Pinch off amount needed, knead a few times and roll to about half an inch. Cut out biscuits and bake at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
