Found this recipe to be a wonderful combination of smoky sweetness. I have served these terrific appetizers at gatherings with friends and family over last two decades. They are always a resounding success. Recently made them for a Halloween party as they are also known as "Gremlins on Horseback". Once again--great success! So simple but full of wonderful bite sized flavor. Enjoy.

Ingredients For bacon wrapped dates

  • 36
    dates, pitted
  • 36
    almonds, whole
  • 12 slice
    bacon, uncooked, smoked hardwood
  • 36
    toothpicks, wooden

How To Make bacon wrapped dates

  • 1
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  • 2
Carefully inspect all dates for any remaining bits and pieces of pits; remove and discard any that are found.
  • 3
Evenly slice each bacon slice vertically into thirds. You should end up with 36 bacon pieces about 2 1/2 inches long.
  • 4
Place an almond into a pitted date. Repeat until all dates are filled.
  • 5
Taking a bacon piece wrap it around an almond-filled date; secure with a toothpick. Repeat until all dates are wrapped.
  • 6
Cover a cooking sheet with foil. Place a baking rack on top of the foil covered cookie sheet.
  • 7
Place all bacon-wrapped dates onto baking rack; I usually end up with four rows when dates are evenly spaced on the baking rack.
  • 8
Place in 425 degree F oven; bake, turning once, for 40 minutes or until bacon is crisp.
