Shelly's Notes:

My Mom made this for years and has shared the recipe with many people, including my aunt, who gave it to her children, who modified the recipe and have opened a Gooey Butter Cake Bakery!

Comments from the Test Kitchen: Kitchen Crew

The buttery flavor of this cake is so good that I just couldn't stop going back for more!

Directions

1
Preheat oven to 350F.
2
Mix together dry cake mix, butter, and 2 eggs and press into a greased 9" x 13" cake pan, pushing the sides up slightly to hold the filling.
3
For filling: Mix cream cheese, remaining 2 eggs, and powdered sugar, till smooth.
4
Pour filling into crust and bake for 35 minutes.
5
Let cool. Serve at room temperature. Store in refrigerator.

I got the recipe from a co-worker years ago...she used to bring it to all our potlucks at work. It was always a hit with everyone.
Sometimes she'd add lemon and lemon rind to the filling and when baked she'd sprinkle powdered sugar over the top.

Hi Shelly, I see you are from Alton IL and I was going to comment that this Gooey Butter cake, not the cake mix recipe, originated in St. Louis MO. When I moved to MI in the 70's I couldn't find it anywhere. When we came back to the St. Louis area, this recipe was being shared by everyone. It truly is a good recipe and have made it many many times. It is definitely a 5 star and a Blue Ribbon recipe. Thanks for sharing.

@Flo...funny thing is, the co-worker I got the recipe from grew up in St. Louis, MO. It was a recipe her Mother always made.

My Mom used to make this cake for family reunions. She would make several and use a different type of cake mix for each one. They were all delicioous...

I would like to try this recipe but can someone tell me what size of cake pan to use? Is it a 13 x 9 or a round cake pan?
