Bonnie's Notes:
The thing I like the best about this breakfast casserole is that it is made the night before Christmas, and it sits in the fridge and blends all the great flavors together. The next morning, you pop it in the oven, and when the aroma wafts through the house, then you know that Christmas has finally arrived. This is our Christmas Morning Casserole, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we do every Christmas morning! Enjoy!

Directions

1
THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS:
Use Pam spray and grease a 9X13 baking dish.
2
Prepare the bread. I use frozen Texas toast bread. (easier to cube frozen, thaw slightly) You can use French bread if Texas toast is not available. Remove the crusts from the bread, cut into 1/2 inch cubes, and place the cubes in the baking dish.
3
Top with the cheese. Beat the eggs and add to the milk and pour over the bread and cheese. Top with cooked ground ham, cooked sausage, shrimp, crabmeat, mushrooms or crumbled bacon, whatever you desire. (I've tried them all, and they are all yummy!) Pour the melted butter over all. Cover with saran wrap and refrigerate overnight.
4
CHRISTMAS MORNING:
Remove the casserole from the fridge, and heat it up slowly so your cold dish doesn't break. I let mine sit on the counter for about an hour and put it in the oven when I put it on pre-heat. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes to 45, depending on the heat of your oven and the altitude. High altitude may take almost an hour to bake. Check periodically with toothpick. When your casserole is done, cover loosely with foil and let rest for 10 minutes so when you cut it, it will come out of the dish in a square.

Cook's Tip: My original recipe called for a whole stick of butter, but I found that 1/2 stick works just fine for us. This is a good recipe for you to make your own. If you have some favorite ingredients that you would like to see added for Christmas morning, have at it! Enjoy!

Yummmmm, It is funny that you posted this because I have just sent one of the Mom's who brings her kid to my gymnastic classes three B-Fast Casseroles from this site. She has the task of doing thin on Christmas Morning and she does not cook at ALL! I will send her yours, and I must say it is very different than the usual sausage, cheese, pepper, onion one! thanks Bonnie!

Leave it to our "Blue Ribbon Bonnie". I have made many different breakfast casseroles in the past but this will be the next one I make. I like the idea of using Texas Toast b/c I think that will add even more wonderful flavor to the casserole. THANK YOU BONNIE!! Your family is so blessed to have you in the kitchen.

You are welcome, Nancy, Donna, and Freda. A friend gave it to me many years ago, and what I liked about it was that you could make it ahead, and add almost anything to it with great results. I lived in Florida at the time, so our first Christmas there, we had it with crab meat. OH, YUM! I am very partial to that, and bacon. My honey loves it with sausage. Sometimes, I do it half bacon and half sausage. Yes, Freda, the sharp cheese just makes it for me, too!

...Also, there is a big difference to us between breads used in this dish. We are partial to the texas toast bread. The texture is perfect in this dish.

Well Bonnie, I moved here from Texas and I agree with you. I like the frozen toast idea since you are doing it the night before! How great!

oops, maybe I gave the impression that it is toasted, bread isn't toasted, crusts are removed and it is cubed.
Oh, I see, the name of the white bread is Texas Toast, but it isn't toasted.
