My son had bad dreams as a small child..we don't know why..(I was one of "those mothers" who timed how much t.v.he watched, and what he watched.I read to him,we sang and played,so where the dreams came from we don't know.) But it would keep him awake sometimes for hours..so I invented "happy dream dust",and when he had a bad dream, out it would come..it really seemed to help..
