If you have the time and inclination, at the end of cooking, remove a couple of cups of the hot cooking liquid. Add some tomato paste, BBQ spices (cayenne, garlic and onion powder, mustard powder, tumeric, etc.) and a little brown sugar and cook this down over med heat in a saucepan. Salt and pepper to taste and viola' - you've made your own BBQ sauce!

Ingredients For crock pot pulled pork or beef

  • 1 lg
    boston pork butt or beef chuck roast, bone in or out
  • 1 bottle
    beer
  • 4 can
    beef broth
  • 2 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • 1 c
    ketchup
  • 2 sm
    bay leaves, dried
  • 1 lg
    onion, quartered
  • 1
    garlic clove, crushed
  • 1/4 tsp
    liquid smoke flavoring
  • 1/2 Tbsp
    paprika, smoked flavor
  • water to cover

How To Make crock pot pulled pork or beef

    Assemble all ingredients on the list, except the meat, and place into large crock pot and turn on to high setting. Keep some heated water on the stove, after meat is added use if needed to cover roast with liquid.

    Dredge the entire cut of meat in regular flour and brown on all sides in a hot, oiled skillet.

    Place browned meat into heated crock pot, if needed, add additional hot water to cover, and allow to cook for 6 hours on high. Turn down to lower setting if meat pulls apart easily with a fork and allow to simmer until serving time.

    Remove meat from crock pot and pull meat apart with a fork for serving on buns. Garnish with BBQ sauce, slaw or whatever your favorite BBQ sandwich toppings may be.
