I found this 1950's recipe somewhere on the Internet, but had never made it until today. This was truly a recipe I could remember. I had enjoyed this even as a youth, and believe me that was a long time ago. Very good and simple to make.

Ingredients For salisbury steak

  • 1 lb
    lean ground beef
  • 1 c
    panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    pepper
  • 1 lg
    egg
  • 1 sm
    onion diced (about 1 cup)
  • 1 can
    (14 oz) beef broth (or half a carton)
  • 1 can
    (4oz) sliced mushrooms (drained)
  • 2 Tbsp
    cornstarch
  • 2 Tbsp
    water
  • 1 pkg
    brown gravy mix or 1 – jar/can brown gravy

How To Make salisbury steak

    Mix First 5 ingredients together and shape into patties about 3/4 inches thick.

    Cook patties in a skillet until brown, turning once. Remove patties from skillet and place in crockpot (or casserole dish).

    In the skillet, add onions, mushrooms, and beef broth; heat to boiling.

    Mix water and cornstarch together to make a paste. Add cornstarch mixture to boiling mixture in skillet. Using a wire whisk; whisk until gravy begins to thicken.

    Using a packet of Mushroom or Brown Gravy Mix, (follow package directions to make the gravy); pour into skillet. Note: (You can also use a jar of premade gravy).

    Pour the gravy over the meat patties and cook on low for at least 3 hours. You could also bake in oven at 350 for about 30 minutes.

    Serve with mashed potatoes.
