Cooking while driving, or manifold cooking, had its bseginning with resourceful GI's faced with the drear prospect of cold beans. GI's found they could heat their beans on the manifolds of their jeeps. This led to the idea of cooking on your car's manifold while you travel. I have personally never done it, but her is a recipe that was in my Lone Star Legacy cookbook.

Ingredients For roadkill 200 mile roast (sallye)

  • 3 lb
    boneless roast
  • 1
    envelope of onion soup mix
  • 1 can
    cooked potatoes (optional)
  • 1 can
    cooked carrots (optional)
  • salt & pepper to taste

How To Make roadkill 200 mile roast (sallye)

    Sprinkle half the onion soup mixture in the middle of a large piece of heavy duty foil. Place roast on the mix. Note: Browning the roast before packaging gives it a good flavor but is not necessary. Sprinkle the remaining soup mix on top of the roast.

    If adding vegetables, place them around the meat, making the package in the general shape of the manifold.

    To package, wrap several layers of heavy duty foil around the meat package, reversing the seam side with each wrapping The foil package should be tied to the manifold with coated wire to prevent the wire from cutting the foil.

    After 100 miles, turn the package over, being careful not to puncture the foil. The meat will cook in its own juice since the steam cannot escape (theoretically). Estimate that 100 miles at 50-55 mph is equivalent to an hour in your oven at 300º to 325º When you arrive at your destination, your food should be ready to eat.
