Ingredients For hermits

  • 1 1/2 c
    flour
  • 2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    cloves (ground)
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    allspice
  • 1/2 c
    shortening
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1
    egg, well beaten
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1 c
    raisins, chopped
  • 1 c
    chopped nuts
  • 1/4 c
    milk
  • for confectioner's frosting:
  • 2 c
    sifted confectioner's sugar
  • 2 Tbsp
    hot water or milk, *about* 2 tablespoons
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla or almond flavoring

How To Make hermits

    Sift flour; measure; add baking powder, salt, cloves, cinnamon, and allspice; sift again.

    Cream shortening; add the 1 cup of regular sugar gradually and continue to beat until light.

    Add well-beaten egg to the creamed mixture; blend well. Add vanilla, raisins and nuts.

    Add the dry ingredients alternately with the milk; mix well. Chill.

    Drop by teaspoonfuls 2 or 3 inches apart onto a well-greased baking sheet. Bake in a moderate oven (350f) 12 to 15 minutes. Makes about 4 1/2 dozen 2-inch cookies.

    For Confection's Frosting: To Confectioner's sugar add hot water or milk gradually until the frosting has a good spreading consistency; add flavor.
