Some things are worth writing down, and pictures are worth a thousand words. I loved helping in the kitchen, and I still do! When my grandchildren came to my house for the day, or for an afternoon, we always made Toll House Cookies a/k/a Chocolate Chip Cookies. How proud each child is when they get to eat their finished product, and Grampa/Ga as we call him also loves to eat them! We also enjoy making Yummies, a/k/a Brown Sugar Meringue Topped Squares

How To Make helping grammy in the kitchen

  • 2
Allow butter to soften before mixing with sugar, etc. Put all ingredients on the work surface and measure dry ingredients into mixing bowl. (photo of Ga Paul and my mom, having a silly moment!)
  • 3
Be sure the child does not touch the stand mixer without supervision. Plug it in just before using it. Raise the bowl before turning the machine on. My grandchildren loved turning it up from low speed to high speed! (photo of Emma)
  • 4
Cream the butter and sugar, add the vanilla and the eggs. Slowly mix in the dry ingredients, and when combined add the chocolate chips and the nuts and stir briefly to blend. (photo of me helping my mom)

Spoon out the dough by the teaspoonful onto the sheet, and place in oven and bake 8-10 mins. checking frequently, do not brown just allow them to turn golden and still not hard to the touch. I like mine chewy, so remove and cool on pan until they can be gently removed and placed on a wire rack to cool. Store in airtight canister. Great to eat while warm with or without a glass of milk!
