I am surprised that I did not find this recipe on JAP. It is a very popular cake in the Northeast and I do not know why Texas is in its name but if you love chocolate, this one is for you. Don't let the list of ingredients or the directions scare you because it is really an easy cake to make and can be done up ahead.

Ingredients For texas sheet cake

  • 2 c
    flour
  • 2 c
    sugar
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 2 stick
    margarine or butter
  • 1 c
    water
  • 4 Tbsp
    baking cocoa powder
  • 2
    eggs
  • 1/2 c
    buttermilk
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
    white vinegar
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract

How To Make texas sheet cake

    Mix first three ingredients together. Mix margarine water and cocoa in pan and bring to boil to dissolve cocoa.

    In another bowl, mix the beaten eggs with the rest of the ingredients and then add to the other mixtures mixing with a beater until smooth. Pour into greased 9 x 13 pan and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

    For Frosting: Frost while cake is HOT!!! Bring to a boil 1/4 lb. margarine, 4 tbsp. of cocoa and 6 Tbsp. of milk. Add 1 box of 10x sugar with 1 tsp. of vanilla.

    Can bake and ice day before and refrigerate. Just remove from refrigerator, uncover and bring to room temperature to serve. Luscious with ice cream!!
