This cake recipe is from my Grandmother's Samson Garden Club cookbook published in 1973. Samson is a VERY small town in south Alabama. This is THE best Red Velvet Cake I have ever eaten. It has always been a hit!

Ingredients For red velvet cake

  • 1 1/2 c
    sugar
  • 2 c
    oil
  • 2
    eggs
  • 2 1/2 c
    flour
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    soda
  • 1 c
    buttermilk
  • 1 tsp
    cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp
    vinegar
  • 2-3
    3 small or 2 large bottles of red food coloring
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • CREAM CHEESE FROSTING
  • 8 oz
    cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 stick
    butter, room temperature
  • 1 pkg
    confectioners' sugar
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract

How To Make red velvet cake

    Cream sugar and oil until well blended. Add eggs and beat until well blended. In a seperate bowl,sift flour, salt and soda, set aside. In a seperate bowl mix vinegar, cocoa powder and color then add to sugar and egg mixture. Beat until mixed well. Add flour alternately with buttermilk. Add Vanilla extract and beat well. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes.

    Frosting: Beat together cream cheese and butter for up to 6-7 minutes. Add Confectioners' Sugar and beat until smooth. Add vanilla extract and mix well. ENJOY!
