Grandma liked berries of all kinds. This is an old recipe that she adapted from the original version that her mother baked in a wood fired oven.

Ingredients For old fashioned blackberry cake

  • 1 c
    raisins
  • 1 c
    boiling water
  • 1 c
    softened butter
  • 2 c
    sugar
  • 4
    beaten eggs
  • 1 tsp
    each cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt
  • 2 c
    blackberries with juice (if fresh, mash slightly, if frozen, thaw)
  • 1 c
    peach preserves
  • 2 tsp
    baking soda mixed in 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 3 c
    all purpose flour
  • powdered sugar and blackberries for topping and filling baked cake

How To Make old fashioned blackberry cake

    Soak raisins in water, set aside. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar. Add eggs. Mix. Stir in cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Mix. Add blackberries, peach preserves, and buttermilk. mix. Add flour and mix until all are combined. Grease and flour cake pans. Bake in 3 round layers at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool.

    Slightly mash blackberries. To assemble cake: Place one layer on cake plate. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Sprinkle some mashed berries on top of sugar. Repeat with the next two layers. Be sure not to put too many berries (or big pieces of berries) in between layers of cake or layers might slide off each other.
