When you cook the butter til the milk solids turn gold, it draws out the rich nutty flavor that adds a depth and richness to this cereal. You won't ever find cereal this delicious in a restaurant. You can add some dried fruit, such as cherries or currants, if you like.

Ingredients For spiced apple oatmeal

  • 1 cup packed dried apples, about 3 oz. very finely diced
  • 3 3/4 cups water
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 cups 5 grain cereal, or oatmeal
  • 6 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 3/4 tsp. pumpkin pie spice

How To Make spiced apple oatmeal

    Put the apples, water, honey and salt in a large pan. Bring mixture to a boil over medium high heat. Stir in cereal, lower heat to a simmer and cook according to the package instructions.

    Meanwhile, put the butter in a small skillet land melt over medium h eat. Continue cooking til butter turns golden, nutty brown. Remove from heat and stir in pumpkin pie spice. Pour 3/4 of the butter into the cereal and stir to mix. Cover and let stand 10 minutes before serving. To serve, divide cereal among four bowls and drizzle some spiced brown butter over each serving. Serves 4
