Online Friendships Blossom into Tasty New Tradition

California cook and Recipe Club member, Dee Stillwell, knows how to bring people together. With her keyboard in one hand and cake-server in the other, Dee recently organized fellow Club members in and around her hometown of Sacramento, and soon their very first Just A Pinch Recipe Club Luncheon was hatched!

The Crew and I were tickled pink when we received Dee's photos of the festivities...and the food! Joined by five other Sacramento area members, Dee quickly found out that, in fact, strangers really are merely friends you've yet to meet. "I hope it will be one of many more get-togethers," says Dee of the luncheon, "and that the turnout is better each time we meet... we had a great time sharing cake and life stories."

Indeed, Dee did not come to the table empty handed; the luncheon served as a wonderful opportunity to sample some Blue Ribbon eats, namely Dee's Tiramisu Layer Cake that she whipped up especially for the event. (After all, everything is better with a cup of coffee and a piece of cake, right?)

Dee and the gals hope to expand their luncheons, and encourage other members from around the country to join them in organizing meet-ups in their own hometowns! "My ultimate goal for these get-togethers," says Dee, "will be for us to get to know other local foodies and eventually get the girls on board to do something in a charitable way."

And it's that kind of giving spirit that truly binds us together. It just never seems to fail that behind each Blue Ribbon is a heart of solid gold. Good people and good food... now that's a recipe for happiness.

Do you have a story of meeting fellow Club members? We'd love to hear it!

Dee, you and so many other members of JAP will never know how much I appreciate you. When the April 27th Tonado hit Cullman, Alabama and destroyed our home my JAP buddies jumped to action. I was staying with a neighbor when three members of The Red Cross knocked on their door (electricity off several days). Terrie H.had sent them to check on us. we had no TV or Internet so we didn't know how the news was being delivered. Much of our downtown had been destroyed, many homes, and our local newspaper had been hit. There was much damage all over our county and communication channels desrupted. Many cell phone towers had been destroyed. Having the Red Cross to look for me by Terrie and learning my JAP fellow members we so concerned about us really touched my heart. Terrie keep all of you informed, I am so humbled by your concern and compassion. Your gifts of love, cards, letters, your thoughts and prayers gives me courage and motivation. Our city looked like a bombs had been dropped. I am trying to recover some normal activity to my life but it's on a day to day trial. To loose your home in a split second just turns your brain around. I still feel like a stray dog, so many mixed emotions. Many nights when I can't sleep I look over your cards and letters. The love of strangers is a Gift of God. To be on the receiving end is truly a blessing. You are a Treasure I hold dear to my heart. I will NEVER forget !!

Jewel, after 9/ll we lost our business. People were worried about their finances and unfortunately one of the ways they could save money was by not paying for the service we provided on a monthly/bi-monthly basis. I understand, everyone was scared after 9/11. People think it effected New Yorker's, but I am far from NY and it devastated my family. We lost our business, and consequently lost everything we owned. It's been almost 10 years, and I still have a sense of loss....but it does get better. I learned a lot. I learned that it isn't what you own that matters, it really is your family and friends that matter. I am so sorry that you lost your home, I know how devastating that is...but I promise that you will be a stronger person because of this and it will all turn out ok in the end. God Bless you, may the road to "normalcy" be a short one for you. It's wonderful to know that people from this site are such kind and caring people. Reading about your experience, and how strangers cared made me feel a sense of relief...I read so many terrible stories everyday, it's nice to read one that includes people that care. Good luck to you, and thanks for sharing that story. And to Dee, who organized the luncheon, thanks for that, too. It made me think of things I can do around my hometown.

Hi,
I would love to start a group here in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Do you have a suggestion as to how I could meet others to start a group here? Maybe Craigslist? Or maybe somehow on your site. Thinking of joining all of you in March. Maybe my sister would enjoy meeting up with me and meeting all of you too. (She lives out in Maryland, so we don't see each other as often as we would like to). This would be a great meeting place. Most of my friends and family are spread out all over the U.S. Now I'm thinking this would be a great place to meet up with them too. Your input would be greatly appreciated. LOVE the recipes! Thank you. Patti

Dear Erin, for sure, I know we are designed to need and help each other. Only when we do that are we creating memories and building strength. If we try to do it against the design, it is a false joy and peace, self defeating, leaving an empty feeling. Things do not fullfill that emptiness, compassion and understanding does. While working as a psych and CD nurse, I wandered about the reason for so much drug abuse and addiction? Have we lost our way of what gives real inner peace? I have my Faith but I spent a lot of time working outside in my flowers and watching the birds. I miss that connection to the creation unexplainable except by a Higher Power. Bless your heart and thanks for sharing to know there are kind, loving hearts re-enforces our faith in man kind. Cheers To The Tide That Binds

Patti don't do Craig's List as it is very scary! Congrats Dee on such a nice article. Patti, Dee can confirm this but I think she went to the JAP Power search for people close to her then PM them. Good luck. Join us for the national meet up in March of next year in FL!
