Drying Pine Cones for Crafts

Good afternoon. I think this is the correct group to ask a craft question??

I am doing a craft with kindergarten and first graders at a school where I volunteer. We will be doing a turkey using pine cones. I washed them and now am drying them in the oven. I realize that I didn't have to do both to clean them; however when I washed them they were so water logged. I read that drying them in the oven at 200 degrees for 30 minutes (someone even said that it could take 1 to 2 hours for them to dry and completely open back up.

They have been in the oven 3 hours and only opened about half-way down the pine cone. Are they going to open back up completely if I keep "baking" them? Or how and how long will I have to dry them in order to have them open and appropriate for crafts.

Thank you very much.
