Kid Friendly Recipes
Kimi Gaines
As a preschool teacher, once a week I would have a cooking class. We made so many cool dishes. I wrote a book called, "Kids in the Kitchen", and A-Z cooking through the
Alphabet. We had so much fun. After leaving due to illness, I didn't grab a copy and I wish I would have.

Yep, that is the key. If you're going to use someone elses recipe, which let's face it, there are tons of them out there and often we don't even know where a recipe originated unless we honestly create it standing in our own kitchen from our own ingredients, not by reading a recipe card, cookbook or etc, then you must write it in your own words or give the source of the recipe and NEVER us the photo of someone else. I think that is the key here and like Bonnie said you are taking the steps to correct that. If you have used Paula's recipes then just make sure in your comment field that you say "This is a Paula Dean recipe" and that will cover that part. Also do your best to change the preparation of the recipe into your own words, that way you're not copying it word for word. So basically everything Bonnie just said to you....LOL I realized as I was typing all this that I pretty much just read it reading her thread. Duh! I'd say this is a lesson to be learned and boy are there lots of members doing the exact same thing. No one takes it seriously until something like this happens. Perhaps there is some good that can come of this and others will see what you're going through to try and change it. You're on the right track.

I have a few of Giada's and Ina's, and Alton's creations, and I am not worried about it because I write the directions in my own words, give the source and credit to the originator, and take my own photos. That is Jap's rules, and it is there for a reason because it works. Don't stress over it. You have taken the right steps to fix it. Kudos to you!!

Well I have a few recipes of hers on the site. It is a fine line for all of it. Anything is possible!!

We had an incident with a Paula Deen recipe on this site, and JAP made her remove her recipe and her photo. She then left the site. I think the issue there was that it was copied VERBATIM and the photo was Paula's, too. If she had used her own photo, copied the ingredients word for word, and used her own Directions, then not a word would have been said. It is very difficult to say if food network cooks have some copyrighted a recipes. It is possible, I guess.(Thinking about the Kentucky Derby Pie recipe) If it can happen once, it can happen again, and we wouldn't know until we get a letter from an attorney like my friend did.

That is very scary...I still need to get 3-4 more books changed. I am so glad you all told me!! I wonder if that is the same with Paula Deen and some of the other cooks that are on TV. are there recipes copywrited?

Good for you, Kimi. That was a very wise decision. Here is a little short story that illustrates that we never know where a problem can pop up. The only recipe that I know of that HAS been copyrighted is Kentucky Derby Pie. The word 'pie' can't be copyrighted, but they copyrighted 'Kentucky Derby Pie'. They have an attorney on staff who surfs the web looking for offenders using that exact name Or their recipe. They have pursued lawsuits and won, too. I read about this in a cooking magazine I subscribe to.

Annette, I have changed all of them with my own pics. I feel a lot better now. Have a few more to do...It took me about 2-3hrs to do it. Thanks for your input...appreciate it a lot.

My suggestion would be stop using photos that aren't yours period. Unless you have written, documented permission that you have on file, don't use any that you don't take yourself. Just as it states in the JAP rules, you have to have permission to use photos so that you are not infringing on anyone's rights. Even if it says free or you are under the assumption that it is free, I wouldn't take the risk. Free in my mind does not mean the same thing as having permission. I would go through the recipes you have and delete the photos and start preparing your own recipes and taking your own pictures. That is the sure safe way of not getting into any type of legal trouble. Good luck.

Just gradually make and replace them with your own photos, or here is an idea: Join the Photo-Less group and save your recipes to that group that have no photo, and one of us will make your dish and provide a photo for you! That is a great group providing a great public service.
